Comparing Harry Potter book covers

Harry Potter is a well known novel popular amongst adults and children. We studied the two contrasting front covers and how they were suited to different audiences. The first cover we looked at was the children's version.

I thought this book cover was aimed at children due to the use of bold, bright colours. The use of these attractive colours would attract a younger audience because the cover seems exciting and entertaining.

The use of cartoons show how this book cover has a younger target audience. It also creates a sense of mystery and make belief which would be largely related to a younger audience.

The cover in general has a more modern and exciting appeal. The use of stars and a cloudy background creates a mystical and magical atmosphere, this would be suitable for children due to the illustrations.

The use of a script like font on the book name and review shows how the book set in an early time has a modern twist.

Then we looked at the adults version of the front cover.

This cover has a more serious approach .The image is a clearer photograph  which gives the novel a more sophisticated approach unlike the children's copy.

The font used it clear and in some ways represents a type writer like font. This could show how the novel is set in an older time period.

The lack of colour in the cover also shows how the novel may be suited to an older audience. The contrasting light and dark grey again gives the book a mysterious approach however there is no insight that Harry Potter is a magical wizard novel.

The cover of the novel looks old fashioned so therefore would appeal to an older audience.

From this task I have learnt that some books are given different front covers to appeal to various target audiences. Therefore I need to make sure that when I am creating my product it is suited to the audience.
